Bethlehem Black is the American furniture and lighting partnership of designers Smith Hanes and Win Collier. Born from the imperative to produce custom case goods, millwork, light fixtures, and miscellaneous decor elements for clients of Smith Hanes Studio’s architecture and interior design practice, Bethlehem Black instruments are holistic light sources, in dialogue with both task and atmosphere.

The firm takes its name from Smith’s great-grandfather: Bethlehem Black, a metalsmith of significance of the North Carolina Piedmont at the turn of the twentieth century. He was the town smitty: the manufacturer of steel wheels for the horse-drawn carriages of the surrounding area.
